J+S S.p.A. carried out as part of the integrated contract in question the executive design of network replacement interventions aimed at reducing water losses in distribution networks. The intervention is funded by the European Union's "Next Generation Eu" through the "National Recovery and Resilience Plan," within the PNRR-M2C4-I4.2_082 intervention "Loss reduction, digitization and monitoring of water distribution networks in the Interconnected Waterworks Systems Central-West Brianza and BRV and United of the ATO Monza and Brianza." The service involves nine executive design segments belonging to the municipalities of Albiate, Biassono, Lissone, Macherio and Sovico.

The project of network replacement interventions is part of an overall logic of optimal management of aqueduct networks, in continuity with the territorial planning identified through the implementation of the Water Plans, which has defined the lines of strengthening and efficiency of aqueduct networks throughout the Province of Monza and Brianza.

The various planned rehabilitation works, aimed at restoring the optimal functioning of the networks by eliminating hydraulic insufficiencies and replacing the deteriorated sections with new pipelines, were identified by the Contracting Authority by selecting through the planning suggested by the Municipal Water Plans the works such as to maximize the ratio of recovered water loss to the amount of the planned works.

The works designed and validated to date include the laying of about 12 km of network. Five Executive Projects are currently underway in the municipalities of Sovico, Lissone, Biassono and Albiate (MB). The preliminary activities of the Executive Design include an initial insertion of the works in the territory and a small-scale detailed framing. The analysis of the state of affairs delves into the planning indicated by the municipal water plan, the geometric survey data and the utilities involved provided by the Client. The factual status of the project area is further examined through field surveys designed to verify the feasibility of the work and through initial discussion and subsequent coordination with the Contracting Authority's water sector. Finally, during this preliminary phase, the feedbacks of the Entities to the requests for subsurface coordination, the opinion of the Archaeological, Fine Arts and Landscape Superintendence for the Provinces of Como, Lecco and Monza and Brianza are collected, and the absence of private properties affected by the planned works is then verified. The presence of any constraints is verified through the main Provincial and Municipal urban planning instruments and with the census of Provincial Roads, State Roads or railway grids in the vicinity of the project area.

  • Laying the new net;
  • Testing and sanitization of the new network;
  • Commissioning of laid pipelines;
  • Connecting utility connections to the new network and starting service to utilities;
  • Removal or decommissioning of the old pipeline.

First, the optimal project route is defined, taking into account the presence of underground utilities, any buffer strips, and road management during execution. Once the location of the new pipelines is established, the hydraulic scheme for reconnecting the project pipelines to the existing network is defined, usually including gate valves to allow hydraulic disconnection between the two elements. Gate valves placed at a maximum distance of about 200 meters are planned along the project lines, so as to ensure the sectioning of part of the distribution network necessary in case of scheduled maintenance or failures and hydrants with fire-fighting function and necessary for the execution of the testing of the new project works. The use of stop-system systems is envisaged for the construction of connections and reconnection of sensitive utilities that cannot be disconnected, in such a way as to avoid the suspension of service to utilities during the work of connection to the new network. The project plan also includes the reconnection of utilities. In addition to the provisions of the Executive Design, our team has prepared the necessary documentation for obtaining authorizations and clearances from involved entities, which are necessary for the implementation of the project works.
