The A4 freeway is located in the most urbanized environment in Italy and is the section with the highest daily influx of vehicles (about 180,000). With these two premises, the idea of creating a dynamic fourth lane (taking advantage of emergency) was born, where it was not possible to physically widen with a permanent lane.
The design involved a stretch that was complex in every aspect, with targeted interventions inherent on 15 existing artworks, 2 new major artworks (a railway underpass and a phonic tunnel), 77 new walls with 56 new sound barriers installed, 5 hydraulic tanks, and 15 variable message portals. J+S was called upon to redesign 90% of the civil works, to study step by step all phases of highway construction and on local roads, and to manage the technical site office.
