Stormwater management within an urban context is increasingly a challenge for modern society. The process of urbanization and thus sealing coupled with ongoing climate change is making our land increasingly vulnerable and at the same time insufficient existing hydraulic infrastructure.

In this context, the project "Integrated Urban Plan Metropolitan City Sponge" was developed from the agreement between the Metropolitan City of Milan and CAP Holding SPA for the implementation of the measures of the PNRR and the Metropolitan Strategic Plan. In particular, J+S (mandated group leader) and the company @LAND Srl (mandated), were responsible for the design and safety coordination of a total of 26 interventions in several municipalities in the province of Milan: Bollate, Cinisello Balsamo, Cormano, Paderno Dugnano, Cologno Monzese, Sesto San Giovanni, Garbagnate Milanese and Bresso.

The main objective of the interventions related to the "Metropolitan City Sponge Project" is on the one hand to reduce the input of stormwater into the mixed sewerage network by seeking alternative solutions for its disposal through sustainable urban drainage systems, namely SUDS (Sustainable Urban Drainage Systems), and on the other hand to carry out a de-impermeabilization of some areas in densely urbanized areas combining also a landscape and fruitive redevelopment of them.

Each intervention was therefore designed with a view, not only to go to improve the hydraulics of the system, but also as an opportunity to redevelop degraded areas, in order to increase their usability, functionality, attractiveness and synergy with the surrounding context; advantages to which are added the greater environmental/landscape and aesthetic value of the area as well as the cultural/social value (raising awareness of the importance of the application of natural and innovative solutions for stormwater management in urban areas). Interventions in detail have involved, for example, the design of a new multisport area with basketball courts, athletic and skate tracks (Cinisello Balsamo) or the creation of a floodable square (Cologno Monzese), in contexts that to date are undervalued.
