The project concerns the widening of the southern carriageway of the A51 Tangenziale Est freeway in Milan between the Forlanini and Mecenate interchanges.
This highway section is being redesigned as part of the third-party initiative called the MONTECITY - ROGOREDO INTERVENTION INTEGRATED PROGRAMME VARIANT PROJECT, which envisages the redevelopment of the Santa Giulia neighborhood, consisting of new production facilities, including the new Arena (included in the Milan-Cortina 2026 Olympic dossier) and new residential developments to be built over the next decade.
The present project thus results:
- essential for usability for the site earmarked for the Miano-Cortina 2026 Olympic Games as demonstrated by the PAUR traffic studies and the roadway study specifically prepared for the project;
- congestion improvement, as argued extensively in the environmental and roadway studies;
- necessary because its non-implementation undermines the functional accessibility of the Olympic site.
